How Our Grandma Accidentally Became Twin Thrift Vintage's Biggest Inspiration
Walk into Twin Thrift Vintage and you'll hear us mention one person more than almost anyone else.
Her name was Nonnie.
She wasn't an interior designer. She wasn't an influencer. She definitely wasn't trying to create a viral aesthetic.
She just knew how to make a home feel loved.
Long before "grandmacore," "cottagecore," or "nonnamaxxing" existed, she filled her home with colorful dishes, cozy blankets, books that had been read a dozen times, flowers from the yard, and furniture that had a story before it ever reached her house.
Nothing matched perfectly. Everything belonged.
When Jordan and I started Twin Thrift Vintage, we realized we weren't just collecting vintage pieces, we were recreating the feeling of walking into Nonnie's home.
If you've ever wondered what "Nonnamaxxing" really means, here's our version.
How “Nonnamaxxing” Became a Pop-Culture Trend
The term “Nonnamaxxing” began gaining wider attention online in early 2026 as part of the internet’s ever-growing collection of “maxxing” trends.
But unlike looksmaxxing, productivity hacks, or routines built around constant self-improvement, Nonnamaxxing is really about opting out.
The trend romanticizes the imagined rhythms of an Italian grandmother's life: long lunches, homemade food, fresh air, natural fabrics, generational recipes, fewer possessions, fancy glasses for everyday drinks, feeding the people you love, and enjoying dolce far niente (the sweetness of doing nothing).
Of course, the internet version is a romanticized one. Real Italian grandmothers aren't all spending their days making pasta beneath the Tuscan sun.
But the reason the idea resonates is real: people are craving slower days, stronger traditions, meaningful rituals, and homes filled with things that feel personal rather than disposable.
For us, the trend feels especially meaningful because Nonnie wasn't an imagined aesthetic. She was our actual grandmother.
She grew up in Baltimore, and one of our favorite family stories is that she was born where third base at Camden Yards sits today.
She was Sicilian, fiercely intelligent, endlessly creative, and somehow managed to be both incredibly elegant and completely practical.
At a time when very few women pursued law, she became one of the first women to graduate with honors from the University of Baltimore School of Law. She could command a courtroom and then come home and hem a dress.
Before "Nonnamaxxing" became a trend, Nonnie simply lived many of the values people now admire: feeding everyone who walked through the door, caring for beautiful things, repairing instead of replacing, and making ordinary days feel a little more special.
She had impeccable style—not because she chased trends, but because she understood quality. She knew how clothing should fit, how fabrics should feel, and if something wasn't quite right, she'd simply sew it herself.
Nothing about her life was disposable.
Not her furniture.
Not her clothes.
Not her traditions.
...and definitely not her plastic and tin containers. (iykyk😂)
She believed beautiful things deserved to be cared for.
So while the internet may call it Nonnamaxxing (also written "Nonna Maxxing"), we simply call it living a little more like Nonnie.
What Nonnamaxxing Means to Us
To us, Nonnamaxxing isn't decorating your house to look like your grandmother's.
It's living the way she did.
Buying things that last. Repairing instead of replacing.
Using the beautiful dishes. Lighting the candles.
Hosting dinner (or a night of cards) even if it's just Tuesday.
Finding joy in everyday rituals.
Surrounding yourself with things that have stories instead of things that simply fill space.
That philosophy has shaped every corner of Twin Thrift Vintage.
The Table Was Always Ready
One thing we remember most about Nonnie's home was that it always felt ready to welcome someone.
Meals weren't about perfection. They were about gathering.
A colorful glass for iced tea.
A serving tray that had seen countless family dinners.
Candlesticks lit simply because they made dinner feel special.
That's why you'll find so much entertaining inspiration throughout our shop:
ROYGBIV vintage glassware
Colorful barware
Cake stands
Serving bowls and platters
Candlesticks
Vintage linens
Napkin rings
Trays and entertaining pieces
These weren't collectibles to hide away.
They were meant to be used.
Below are some of the ways "Nonnamaxxing" has come into Twin Thrift and our lives.
1. Buy Once. Love It Forever.
Nonnie never bought something just because it was trendy.
She bought pieces she genuinely loved.
Try this:
✓ Instead of buying five inexpensive vases, find one vintage vase you'll want to display for years.
✓ Invest in solid wood instead of particle board whenever possible.
✓ Don't worry if your home "matches." The best homes evolve naturally.

2. Use the Good Glasses
This might be the biggest Nonnie lesson of all.
She believed beautiful things should be enjoyed not saved (!!).
Life is happening now.
Try this:
Drink your morning orange juice from a pink Depression glass.
Pour sparkling water into crystal.
Set the table with vintage dishes just because it's Wednesday.
Light the candlesticks even if you're ordering pizza.

3. Learn One Simple Repair
One reason vintage lasts so long?
Someone took care of it.
Nonnie could sew.
She replaced buttons.
Hemmed pants.
Adjusted sleeves.
She understood that a five-minute repair could give something another twenty years.
Try this:
Learn one basic skill.
Sew on a button.
Mend a small tear.
Polish brass.
Wash vintage linens correctly.
Glue loose pottery before it breaks further.
Vintage ownership is about stewardship.
4. Collect Color Fearlessly
Walk into Twin Thrift Vintage and you'll notice something different.
Everything is organized by color.
That's intentional.
Color makes collecting easier.
It also makes decorating more joyful.
Try this:
Instead of buying everything in neutral tones, start a collection.
Maybe it's:
💛 Amber glass
💚 Green vases
💙 Cobalt dishes
❤️ Ruby red barware
💜 Purple candlesticks
Before long you'll have a collection that feels uniquely yours.
5. Build a Closet Slowly
One section of our shop has a very special name.
She taught us that style isn't about having more.
It's about knowing what looks good on you.
Quality fabrics. Great tailoring. Classic silhouettes.
Pieces that still feel beautiful twenty years later.
Try this:
When you're vintage shopping, ask yourself:
"Would I still wear this five years from now?"
If the answer is yes...
It's probably worth bringing home.

Vintage clothing
Denim
Sweaters
Dresses
Jackets
Scarves
Handbags
Jewelry
6. Every Room Needs Something That Makes You Smile
Not everything has to be practical.
Sometimes joy is practical enough.
That's why we love:
Brass animals
Quirky artwork
Vintage books
Colorful planters
Handmade pottery
Decorative trays
Interesting clocks
These are the pieces guests remember.
7. Fresh Flowers Fix Almost Everything
This may be the easiest Nonna Maxing tip.
Flowers don't need to come from a florist.
Clip something from the yard. Buy grocery store carnations.
Dry hydrangeas at the end of summer.
Place them in a vintage pitcher or colorful vase.
Instant charm.
8. Entertain Without Waiting for a Special Occasion
One thing we loved most about Nonnie's house was how welcoming it felt.
People stopped by.
Coffee was poured.
Dessert appeared.
Nobody cared if everything was perfect.
Try this:
Invite friends over for coffee and entenmann's coffee cake (if you're a real Baltimoron, you know!).
Serve dessert on the cake stand. Use the vintage tray. Put on music, preferably Rat Pack or Pavoratti.
The memories matter more than matching plates.
9. Leave Room for Serendipity
The best vintage collectors know one secret.
You almost never find everything in one trip.
And that's the fun.
Come in looking for a blue vase.
Leave with the brass duck you didn't know you needed.
Your home should surprise you a little.
Why Twin Thrift Vintage Exists
People sometimes ask why we're so passionate about vintage.
The answer isn't just because we love old things.
It's because vintage reminds us of the people who taught us to appreciate them.
Every colorful glass.Every brass candlestick.
Every handmade quilt.Every vintage sweater.
Every carefully tailored jacket.
Somewhere, someone loved it before you.
For us, that someone is often Nonnie.
She showed us that style isn't about buying the newest thing.
It's about choosing beautiful things, taking care of them, and passing them on.
That's the heart of Twin Thrift Vintage.
So if you've been hearing about Nonna Maxing online, here's our advice:
Don't try to recreate someone else's grandmother's house.
Build a home filled with pieces you love, use them every day, care for them well, and one day let them become someone else's treasured vintage finds.
We think Nonnie would have liked that.
